Sex is legal for 12 hours a year in this cheeky rom-com with a Handmaiden-lite, dystopian backdrop.

In the not-too-distant future, a totalitarian bill has been passed forbidding any and all forms of carnal activity between unmarried couples. Some resist the surveillance state encroaching on our very bodies, while others are about as fazed by it as any other recent violation of our personal liberties. But on one night of the year, the ban is lifted, and sex is fully is allowed.

We follow the routes of Owen (Callum Turner) and Allie (Monica Barbaro) as they hunt for sex against a ticking clock. Owen had a plan with his girlfriend (Maya Hawke) but she chooses the night as an opportunity to hook up with a neighbour, while Allie is urged by her roommate to get herself out there. Their paths intertwine and decide to, at first, play each other’s wingmen from Manhattan to Brooklyn and back again.

One Night Only is less romcom and more a raunchy sex caper as we go from scrape to scrape, involving cameos and a string of almost-shags. It’s steamy fun.
